Long-eared Owl juvenile

Ottawa, Ontario.

I was looking up when I should have been looking down. Would have saved some unnecessary neck strain. Perched on a branch low to the ground, my heart skipped a beat as this juvenile long-eared owl stared right at me. Nestlings begin to walk out of the nest onto nearby branches at about 3 weeks, but are not capable of flight until about 5 weeks.

What a delightful photo.. I love that the eyes have that wise look already and he's so fluffy. A spectacular shot. V+++

Very nice picture. We rarely see the babies of these specie.

Even though they cannot yet fly, long-eared owlets make use of their sharp talons and beak to climb up the sides of trees to a higher perch.

What a wonderful fuzzy creature. They must be quite vulnerable during that couple of weeks walking around but not flying. Super capture.
