The plane Jack was on had engine trouble -runaway prop. [can you imagine one of those beautiful recips having trouble????] They were supposed to go to Hickam, but were diverted to beautiful downtown Midway Island. At least the navigator was able to find the postage stamp size island! Jack isn't sure of the type of A/C but I am guessing a C-54. If I am not mistaken, the birds in the picture are the "Dumbo" Albatross that the C-47 got it's name of "Gooney Bird" from. Also, the SA-16 was called the Dumbo. After I returned to the ZI and was in SAC, we had the SA-16's at Goose Bay and used to go out and land on one of the many lakes to go Fishing. Who said AF types didn't know how to have fun. According to legend, one of our B-47 pilots was supposed to have brought an MG from England in his bomb bay. This was the 40th Bomb Wing at Smoky Hill AFB Kansas.
