2007: Proximity to Mauna Hualalai, so much less known than Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea and now considered "dangerous" by the US Geological Society, exposes Kailua to tremors. One of the recent tremors has severely damaged the Hulihe`e Palace in Kailua. Our images show the extend of the damage. All artifacts were already removed and the building will be retrofitted to withstand tremors.

2008: Parking is a nightmare, especially prices for parking surely scare off many visitors from staying in town, and so Kailua makes impression of being partly abandoned. In Feb 2008 we found many restaurants shut down and office space standing empty. This includes even such large restaurant like the Hooters. Not that we miss Hooters in such a place, but it is a sign of erosion in Kailua as we see it. Hint hint: Let people park to gather them in town, they will spend their money while they stroll the waterfront...

2016: Former Torche's still empty, but... the town won back a lot of its charm. Hulihe`e has been restored and we saw every day lots of visitors. We begun to feel home in Kona, and I am sure: we will be back.
