Impressions from Hamakua Coast, Jan. 2007 Hamakua Coast stretches for approx. 55 miles from Hilo to Waipi'o Valley on the windward (wet, very wet) side of the Island. Shoreline is mostly a cliff, vegetation is lush, contains many valleys separated by gulches and streams. The famous Akaka Falls are among the attractions. Of course, one day is not enough to see everything what Hamakua has to offer. It is often very rainy on this side of the Islands, what keeps vast majority of visitors on the Kona side. We found ourselves forced several times to "duck the rain" during our trip, but the luck was on our side: In each point of interest we arrived as the sun popped out, and we continued as soon rain set on, only to find another sunny break on the next stop. This made on us of course a magic impression and we have very found memory of what we saw along Hamakua Coast. Definitely a "must see" for every visitor to the Big Island. |
