The large eruption of Pu'u O'o, which destroyed the Royal Gardens and the
town of Kalapana occurred in 1990. Approx. 2.5 years later, in Jan. 1993 the volcano
was by far not so spectacular, but still, the brief visit to this site was very impressive.
See also if something has changed 14 years later.
Our schedule for the mere 12 hours on the island was quite tight:
The fine dust from the Pu'u O'o Vent was impacting the visibility. This dust emission is called vog, a Volcanic Fog. Vog looks like an ordinary haze and is well visible on all images in this gallery. The looks are deceiving though. Vog causes respiratory problems to some people and it invades literally everything: skin, clothes, equipment. I have washed off the dust from the front elements of the lenses several times during the day. |
