Atlatl Rock

Valley of Fire SP, Nevada

this is Atlatl Rock, where Native Americans pecked pictures, some dating to more than 1500 years ago, into the patina of dark 'desert varnish'

the name comes from a spear throwing device called an atlatl...one can be seen at the top of the image above a fletched spear

Great capture of this historical find. Too bad people need to deface it. V

A fascinating capture of information left by the ancients of long ago. What I love about this area of the country is that in some places, little has changed since they left these markings. When looking at these marking just for a moment, time stands still. Thanks so much for sharing David. Voted++

Well defined pictographs. If some expert could tell you what the full story means. One can only surmise.

Fascinating to see this grouping of petroglyphs David. Interestingly atlatl is a Nahuatl word, a language which originated in the American Southwest, and which also gave us words such as avocado, tomato and chocolate. A pity that John, Joe and others felt compelled to add to this.
