Death Valley, California

one of several such operations, the Harmony Borax Works had it's heyday 1883-1888...once refined, the borax was carried on it's hot trip to railheads in these wagons drawn by large mule teams

borax has been used to coat stain resistant porcelain, and in the preparation of medicated bandages, antiseptic solutions, cosmetics, and cleansing agents, as well as glazed paper
