to early Anglo settlers this was Ship Rock, resembling a ship's prow, yet to local Navajo this is 'rock with wings', and plays a role in their mythology...in the end it is the remnant of a volcanic explosion about 30 million years ago...the dike, or wall, leading away from it is made of solidified lava..Ship Rock is a local landmark that can be seen from many miles away
