petroglyphs

Butler Wash, Utah

petroglyphs pecked into the patina of the rock surface, the goal of our trek down into Butler Wash (see previous)..native Americans made these centuries ago, and the primitive artwork is known as the Wolfman Petroglyph Panel...certainly the human figure has claw-like hands, and a pair of wolf-paw prints amid the etchings adds to the impression..a few plant and bird images are evident, while a couple of geometric figures remain more enigmatic

These are some of the clearest, most well preserved petroglyphs I've ever seen. Your outstanding capture was well worth the effort. Of course it wasn't me making the effort. V

Great to see these. This would have been worth the trip alone for me, I find these petrolgyphs fascinating and beautiful. These seem to be so well preserved and it can easily be discerned in your well taken image that they were done by a highly skilled hand. I have seen figures with the "claw-like heads" in cave paintings in Baja California. So good you got this impressive photo, especially in light if Sam's comment. "V"

Sam's comment has echos of the Taliban destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan.

Quite amazing these are in such fine shape, except for those bullet marks. Excellent capture. V
Sam Rua26-Apr-2014 15:23
Nice capture of the prize, David. I did not notice all of the bullet pocks while we were there, but there certainly are a lot of them that I notice now. I remember our guide in Canyon De Chelly saying that some of this vandalism has been attributed to religious zealots who were trying to destroy images of what they considered to be paganism.
