moko

Waitanga Treaty Grounds, North Island

the indigenous people of New Zealand are the Maori, who arrived from Polynesia more than 1,000 years ago...one quarter of a million currently live in New Zealand, where their culture has been undergoing a renaissance in recent decades...much earlier they signed an important treaty with the British at Waitanga...a deeply significant place even today...this carved face from the meeting house features ‘moko’… a traditional tattoo design

A really fascinating carving.
Nicely capturing the highlights.
David, you have the knack for doing these portrait images, as you did with the sand sculptings! Well done....
