Floodplains goanna, Varanus panoptes

Mamukala, Kakadu National Park

The Floodplains goanna or Galawan has suffered a catastrophic decline in numbers since the arrival of the Cane Toad.
Nonetheless the survival of old, healthy individuals such as ths specimen give hope that the species might pull through.
The decline of such a charismatic, iconic and culturally important species for me has been the most obvious impact of
the introduced toad, as Varanus panoptes were a highly visible species in the environment prior to the toad's arrival.

Sad to hear the cane toad is in Kakadu. Superb shot of the goanna Alex.
