Yellow-spotted monitor, Varanus panoptes

Boulia, Qld

Amongst the overgrazed blacksoil plains of far western Qld pickings can be pretty slim for a large predator such as this
specimen, which appeared to sadly be on the verge of starvation. At my approach this beautiful old lizard merely extended its
legs and hissed, collapsing back down on its belly when I moved away. Although feeding animals is bad, I wished I had something
to offer it, but I didn't and left this ancient reptile to its fate.
