Lace Monitor

Wild Dog Mountains, NSW, Australia

The Lace monitor is the second largest species occurring in Australia and makes its living seeking out nestling birds and eggs,
small mammals and carrion. This lizard can reach over two metres (6') in total length and is one of the top-order predators
in the Australian bush.
The specimen illustrated here was found on a fauna survey west of Sydney in the Wild Dog Mountains.
It is warming itself on a termite mound.

Another great shot Mr D. There are many of these at the camp site at Thurra River (Point Hicks - Croajingalong National Park) in far East Gippsland. They often wait for humans to leave the area, then raid the rubbish bags or (as I have seen), knock over an esky and make off with a dozen eggs! Truly magnificent creatures that scare the hell out of kids when they come upon them by surprise. But they give fair warning that they're approaching by the crunching of leaves as they move. Actually, I saw one of these scarpering away from a screaming kid on a bike...the beast looked more frightened than the kid, and slightly comical (cartoonish). Thanks for the great pics.
