Coolatai Sign

Coolatai NSW

Coolatai is a sleepy little village in northern NSW which has 19 houses and about 35 residents in the village, depending on the
time of day. (The number of houses doesn't change with the time of day, just the number of residents).
It also has an excellent pub.

This is the roadsign visitors are faced with when they approach Coolatai from any direction, and when I get brave enough to talk
to tourists one of the most frequent questions is "What's the deal with the cats?" I gently point out that they are panthers, and that
there is a legend that the district is stalked by a large black panther that was seen by a couple of locals some years ago. Given
that the only other claims to fame that Coolatai might have are a large, equally mysterious rock, an invasive grass from Africa that
threatens to turn Australia into a paddock, and it is the hub of the publishing empire of Faunaverse (Australian wildlife in poetry),
a panther is a pretty attractive mascot. However, as the local wildlife guy who has put up camera traps around the place and
carefully looked for tracks on every patch of sand, I'm pretty confident that I can wander the bush around Coolatai at night and
my only fear is ticks, pigs, locals with guns and the very unlikely event of standing on a snake which takes umbrage to it.

Those red eyes are reflective at night, which was a non-sanctioned addition to the signs by a well-meaning vandal.
