Shirley Plantation

Charles City County, Virginia

Situated on the banks of the James River, Shirley was established in 1613 and is considered one of the oldest plantations in Virginia and one of the oldest family-owned businesses in North America. The present mansion featured in this photograph was completed in 1738 upon the marriage of Elizabeth Hill to John Carter, eldest son of Robert "King" Carter. The Carter family continues to reside there to this day.
