Indian Mongoose

Honolulu, Hawaii

The mongoose was introduced into Hawaii in 1883 in an attempt to control canefield rats. This did not work out, since the rats were nocturnal. Instead, the mongoose fed on birds and eggs, wiping out much of Hawaii's native bird population.

Mongooses don't rank highly on the list of what "wiped out" many of Hawai'i's native birds. Mosquitoes, rats, cats, pigs, sheep, goats, cattle and of course humans all have had much worse impact on the majority of the native birds.
