Laura Milholland

Oakland Zoo

This is a Griffon Vulture.
They are from the area around the Mediterranean and can weigh up to 15 pounds,
with a wingspan up to 8 feet. I love the white "furry" look of the head
which is unusual for scavengers.
That's a bit of feather stuck on his mouth, he had just been grooming himself.

1/800s f/5.6 at 62mm iso-50
TCON-14B spot metered and flash

other sizes: small medium original auto

Those feathers are so sharp I feel I could touch them.
He seems to be eyeing you up as potential lunch

An ugly bird but a beautiful photo. Nice and sharp with good exposure showing excellent detail in the feathers, beak and eye. That stare is piercing!

Marvelous photo... I love the difference between the many kinds of feathers... from fuzzy tiny feathers on the head and neck to the broad distinctive feathers on his back and wing. Also the beak looks almost metallic and I love the dusty blue eye shadow around his clear eye! The vulture at our zoo is behind a chain link fence... oh how I'd love a clear view of him! Carm

OK everyone, look lively, no loitering, he's not had his lunch ! What a cool bird! We see some Turkey Vultures here, but niothing as regal looking as this one.
