Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica)

A very invasive shrub, native to Europe, which has spread rapidly throughout many parts of Southern and Eastern Ontario. It can grow in sun and shade in many conditions. This shrub has a small thorn on its branches, which the other common buckthorn species, glossy buckthorn, does not have.

Interesting details, Christine. Fortunately we don't seem to have this invasive species here,
though we do have several small garden forms of Rhamnaceae.
