This is a native shrub which forms large colonies thanks to its ability to sprout prolifically from the root. We've watched sumac form large stands at the garden, spreading outward from one shrub (the "mother plant") and quickly filling in open land. However, the fruit is eaten by many birds and animals, including at the garden, chickadees, crows, squirrels, and the twigs are eaten by rabbits. In the wilds, many more species of animals feed on this shrub.
