Newly formed goldenrod gall

This bright green gall on a goldenrod stem is newly formed. In time it will turn brown as the stem turns brown, and on old stems, from the previous year, one may find softer, almost papery grey galls. If they have no exit holes, or have not been opened by predators, no doubt the larva has died inside.
