The arch to my left isn't a ruined bridge,
it's all that's left of a flue from the lead smelting works at Rookhope.
It took the poisonous fumes away up to the top of the moor
to avoid prematurely killing the workforce.
Now the land is sufficiently recovered for cows to be grazing where the smelting mill used to be.
