The Eszterhazy Palace

Fertõd (Hungary)

We had to go to a town called Sopron in west Hungary
and took the chance to stop by perhaps the grandest Hungarian tourist attraction,
the Eszerhazy Palace, built in Rococo style for Prince Nikolaus Eszterhazy.

The Palace was first inhabited in 1766, but construction continued for several more years.
The opera house was completed in 1768. Its first performance was of Joseph Haydn’s Lo Speziale.
Haydn, in fact, wrote the majority of his symphonies for the prince’s orchestra.

The fountain in front of the palace was not completed until 1784, at which point the Prince considered his project complete.

Looked rather complete for us, too.
