_MG_1109-North Beach @ Block Island

Block Island, RI

In an area about twice the size of the rocks shown here, visitors come to practice their rock balancing art/skills. I shot this scene earlier in the day and it was difficult to pick out these rock creations from the rest of rocks due to the flat light. So I came back just before sunset and waited for the sun to distinguish between the various piles and the lower rocks around them. Block Island is a 13 mile ocean ferry ride south of the Rhode Island shoreline. The average private home on the island is probably well over a million dollars. The island is only about 6 miles by 2.5 miles. I feel like calling it "Blocked Island" as it seems most of the interesting roads to good views are marked "Private!".

A very smart photographer, waiting for the sun to be at just the right place to catch only the tips. Made for a beautiful capture Fred!

And I know what you mean about blocked access to scenic views. This is one of my pet peeves and have run into that situation countless times in my travels. Another photographic-frustration are overlooks where undergrowth has been allowed to grow back and now blocks the view, so the overlook now looks over nothing but branches and leaves.

Excellent use of light to emphasize the subjects, Fred. Not to mention, this is also a beautiful shot and an interesting story to go with it.
