Skeeter Eater (Pterodactyl Fly in Oregon)

The crane fly, also called mosquito eater, skeeter eater, and daddy long legs.
In Oregon, where I live, it is sometimes called the 'pterodactyl fly'.

Really nice detail in the wings and body!
Rebecca Leberman 13-Aug-2012 23:10
Fantastic shot. The only thing that could make it better (and only if it were a scientific photograph) would be to get a clear view of the feet.
Ann13-Aug-2012 19:15
The detail in the wings in particular is amazing.

Nicely done. It would be handy to be able to call them in to places like this when mosquitos arrive and there is no defense.

Wish we had some of these around here. The skeeters are bad this summer. Great shot!

Terrific macro shot!
Sam Rua10-Aug-2012 22:52
Nice detail and light, Vern. Unfortunately, they really don't prey on mosquitoes, at least not the flying adults. But that would be very cool if they were to do that. Regardless, I much prefer to see these around than mosquitoes. :)

They are much more attractive close up than I'd ever have guessed. They are thick around here in the Spring.
