This guy is pecking holes into a hickory tree in preparation for feeding.
The sapsuckers peck holes into the bark to allow the sap of the tree to create
a trap for insects, which the birds eat (along with the sap). The holes are almost always uniformly
dispersed around the tree and they have been known to feed off over 200 different varieties
of trees.
