We stayed in the Marina Mandarin ( the hotel with Meritus on it ) in 1989. The theatre wasn't there then and it was all parkland along the esplanade. Beneath the hotel was a shopping centre called the Tokyo and the War Memorial Park was sealed off as there were roadworks ( Nicoll Hwy) surrounding it, but we could see the " chopsticks " Raffles Hotel too was closed for refurbishment but I had a long lens that gave me some great photos from our hotel balcony...The Stamford Hotel was the tallest building then :)
