Just a taste of the exotic sandstone formations in Valley of Fire.
The allure of the park is its Permian and Jurassic sandstones with poetic names like Navajo, Aztec and Moenkopi. These would have been exposed and eroded long ago except that a plate bumping against California pushed a protective layer of about two miles of older dolomite rocks on top.
