1896-O Morgan Dollar

This scarce silver dollar was minted in New Orleans a hundred and ten years ago. It currently rests in a NumisTrust slab. Although NTC graded it at MS-64, the slightly mushy strike and cheek abrasions mark it no better than MS-63.

The New Orleans mint punched out nearly five million coins in 1896 but the general quality was very poor. A significant number of them were lost to the Pittman Melt of 1918, their silver content sent to Britain to finance the Great War. Consequently, the 1896-O is somewhat scarce in any grade and truly rare in MS-64 and above.
