Huntington Park or South Gate, Ca.

Hoot Owl Cafe- A Trip Back in Time
The Hoot Owl Cafe was designed and built by my Grandfather in 1926.
The head rotated; the eyes made from Buick headlights, blinked;
the sign used elements of a theater marquee. My Grandmother ran
this cafe for over 50 years.
I only remember it being located in South Gate California
on Long Beach Blvd. off Firestone Blvd.
I know it was moved at least once from another location.
I have a malt glass and an ice cream scoop from this cafe.
It was torn down in 1979.

I did not take this photo. This cafe belonged to my
grandmother. If the photographer is known, please
let me know and I will give credit. full exif

I remember walking with my Dad the few blocks to this restaurant for their Roast Beef lunch. What a treat. I do remember the older woman who ran the restaurant.

My memory is that this building was located on Long Beach Blvd. north of the Seville St. intersection. It was painted white, and I seem to remember that there was a small addition to the building that is not shown in this photo.

By the way, I remember the name Hattrup from my childhood - there was a Hattrup in my boy scout troop and perhaps at St. Helens grade school.

This photo was taken in 1927. The location was on Valley Blvd. in Rosemead, California A little less than one year later it was moved to South Gate, California. It was moved because of lack of customers. Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. was opening a factory in South Gated at that time Wishing for a better location and more customers. It had to moved again in 1949 when the property was sold. A new location in South Gate, South of Firestone Blvd. Operated for over 50 years!
