Select the custom shape and choose the Path option (1)
Use mouse to drag out the grid. Without releasing the mouse button,
move the mouse to create the desired shape and hold down the space bar
to reposition the entire grid. When the important subjects of the composition
are placed at the desired points, release the mouse button (2)
In the Paths palette, click on Load Path as a Selection (3).
Using the selection, crop the image.
