A modificaton for easier and better results:
At step two, when selecting the area that you want to place on the ball,
use the ELLIPSE tool with the shift key held down to make a true circle.
Then CROP.
Now your picture will have the spherize area selected and square total image.
This will eliminate the trial and error approach that I originally used in steps 2, 3 and 4.
