Rename background layer to unlock
activate layer mask
select gradient fill with foreground (white) to background (black) gradient
place mouse over subject and drag to a distant border area.
A better way might be to make the mask on a duplicate layer of the original.
Then you can blend the layers together with opacity and/or layer blending mode changes.
This allows you to fine tune the gradient and create all sorts of unusual effects.
