The crew stopped the long train south of Stevenson Blvd, cut off the lead unit to run up to Niles and run it around the wye there. This would get the lead unit into a cab-forward arrangement. Unlike some eastern railroads like Norfolk Southern (and predecessors Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway), UP crews are not accustomed to running locos long-hood forward, nor are their units equipped with ditch lights on the long-hood end.
