Statue of Jan Pieter Minckeleers (1748 - 1824) by Bart van Hove (1904) on the Markt. Minckeleers was a physics professor in Leuven and teacher in Maastricht. He discovered coal gas (1784) and was the first to use it for lighting: in 1785 he lit his auditorium with it.
