Mushrooms (at least that's what we refer to them as) covered the forest floor, and within a small area we spotted a minimum of six different varieties. As true novices when it comes to identifying these remarkable fungi we quickly became totally absorbed with photographing them. Note: Trying to identify them has been a learning process and we unquestionably still retain our 'novice' status.

Mushroom facts: A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source. Mushrooms are not plants, they are a fungus. They eat organic matter, they do not photosynthesize like plants do.

Many species of mushrooms seemingly appear overnight, growing or expanding rapidly. This phenomenon is the source of several common expressions in the English language including "to mushroom" or "mushrooming" (expanding rapidly in size or scope) and "to pop up like a mushroom" (to appear unexpectedly and quickly). In reality all species of mushrooms take several days to form primordial mushroom fruit bodies, though they do expand rapidly by the absorption of fluids. ~ Wikipedia
