Late Summer Visitor

Southern Vancouver Island

This years young are grown now and traveling south. Today a few stopped to feed before moving on and they were much less settled than the 'regluar' crop of hummers, zipping about and seldom landing for more than a moment. It was a challenging day...but we had lots of 'atta boys' when we managed a good, clear shot! Hummingbird facts: "It is believed that hummingbirds are very keen on the changes in daylight and the declining insect and flower population every year before migration. It is also believed that a chemical change occurs pushing the little hummingbirds to migrate. Some report that hummingbirds will follow the flower population; still others state that they follow the insect population. These are only speculations. No one really knows for sure why hummingbirds migrate." ~ World of Hummingbirds

One of the sharpest hummingbird in- flight shots I've ever seen. Without the branches in the back and foreground it would be a perfect 10. Nice going though.
