Broken Antler

Southern Vancouver Island

Broken antlers are not uncommon among deer, but not something you see everyday. Other than looking a little 'unbalanced' this buck seemed to be unfazed by his injury. Deer facts:Deer antlers are among the fastest growing tissues known to man. Growing as much as a ½ inch per day during peak development. Growing antlers are covered with a living tissue called velvet. During development, the deer’s antlers are very delicate and extremely sensitive to the touch. This is also the time when most antler damage or breakage occurs. If an antler is injured during this period of rapid growth, it may become misshapen for the remainder of the year. Some unusual antler racks are due to genetics, but most are the result of an injury to the growing antler itself.
