This building sits on the corner of a main downtown intersection and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Nanaimo. The Bank of Commerce is a three-storey, Classical Period Revival style building, built in 1914 and rehabilitated in 1997. It is an important intact example of the type of bank architecture that predominated throughout Canada during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The structure was built to standard plans designed by Bank of Commerce staff architect Victor Horsburgh.
