This gap prevents the IHS from resting on the PCB and instead allows the IHS to rest fully on the die after removing all traces of sealant and old TIM. One should confirm that this is indeed the case before new TIM is applied. If the IHS is found to be resting on the PCB then sanding is the only resolution.
