We caught (and released) what we believed was a Northern Brown snake on the Lake Huron just north of Sturgeon Point Lighthouse (north of Harrisville, Michigan, about 25 miles south of the 45th parallel). Was docile and very fast. It had been making its home under and in the treads of a tire on my Sitech trailer that carries my sailboat. It was brown and subtly mottled just like this picture. It had a cream belly. It was about a foot long and emitted a foul fishy odor (probably urinated) when my wife picked it up.
