Melinda, There is only one harmful (poisonous) snake in Michigan - the massasuaga rattler. The little red-bellied snake does not even bite when picked up - at least not one has ever bitten me! I suppose that a cat or other pet could get sick from eating one, but I have never heard of that. At least your kids won't be trying that, I hope!

I just found one of these inside my barn by the hay and it is like 6inches or so are they harmful to kids and cats becasue my barn cat got sick from one . I live in Montcalm county / Vestaburg

saw a very small black snake, about 4 inches long with a coral, orange or red belly
hibernating under black groundcloth next to the house 3/17/09 in Stockbridge - Ingham County
