4/16/06 - Trillium Gold Dust

Along the Appalachian Trail as it passes though the Thompson Wildlife Management Area near Linden, Virginia. Home of an estimated 3,000,000 trillium. They are just starting to bloom. Just a handful here and there. In a week or so the forest floor will be covered with them. Worth the trip if you're in the area.
If you're not familiar with trillium, here's a more conventional view of a white one. http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/58734828 Equal numbers of white & pink can be found at Thompson. I had once been told that they were all white and turned pink as they aged - today I saw both pink and white blossoms just beginning to open; so much for that story.
