8/05 - Harbor View

A view of the yesterday's image (click Next) from a slightly different angle - and with the fog lifted and the tide in.
Scrambling around to try to find interesting angles and perspectives - and experimenting with different lenses and settings to capture the scene - is what makes photography so much fun. My wife & I often discuss what sets apart a good photo from an ordinary photo. She once said that anyone with a camera could have taken a given shot, so what makes any particular photograph(er) special? I think the difference is between "taking" a photo and "making" an image. In one case you "take" what is given to you & is obvious. To "make" an image requires some work and thought. The good photographer works at making an image & the rest of us take snapshots.
What was that all about? Well, I must've tried a dozen or more shots of this scene with different vantage points, time of day, light, weather, etc. Very few of them made me happy. What would Ansel have done?

So true, so true. And sometimes you can see it in your mind's eye, but the lighting is just not right, or the image appears flat and one-dimensional. Still, I'm enjoying endeavouring to make those 'perfect' images - I hope you are too. Great shot, btw.

I appreciate the thought and effort you put into this. There's a set of twisted trees that always strike me when I see them, whether it's summer or winter. I've taken many shots from them from differents sides, different angles, from the ground on my back, but I'm never happy with the finished product. But I know there's a picture there, I just haven't found it yet.
