7/2/05 - Gazebo Infrared

Honorable Mention Advanced Monochrome, End of Year Competition - 2005-6 - Northern Virginia Photographic Society
3rd place, advanced monochrome prints, 9/20/05, Northern Virginia Photographic Society
I keep trying to improve on my infrareds of this gazebo. Finally got a bit of the small waterfall in the image which I think helps. Shot this at f/29; never closed down the aperture below 16 previously. Wanted the long-long exposure with the falling water - although the 2-3 seconds at my normal f/11 or f/16 probably would have been fine. Doesn't seem to have harmed the rest of the image - even with the resulting 10 second exposure time.
This hayfield is the scene I started out to get - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/45601826 - but arrived about 10 minutes too late for the sunrise and got stuck with a bad sky. I asked for help choosing between these two. My wife, who chose the pine at big meadows for the 6/29 PAD - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/45494241 - said that compositionally the hayfield was too similar to the pine and chose the infrared for variety.

Great IR image. An inspiration. I'm still in the early stages of learning how to use IR effectively and have yet to create anything that's worthy. I feel like the technology keeps getting in the way of the artistry. You prove it can be done and done well. Thanks.
