3/30/05 - Lewis Falls

Weekly Shenandoah Park visit. This is the upper falls at Lewis Falls - about 1 1/4 miles below Big Meadows on the west side of the mountain. I didn't feel up for the 100 foot rock scramble to the lower falls. Lots of water flowing after heavy rains the past week. Moss covered boulders & logs everywhere. Just going back up 1 & 1/4 miles of steep rocky trail after the descent to here was enough for my 68 year old body - and 8-9 pounds of tripod & camera plus 15 pounds on my back didn't help. I'll save the lower falls for another day after I get myself back into the shape that I thought I was in (not!). I used a ND filter screwed into a circular polarizer to get the longer shutter speed that I wanted at midday & to handle the glare on the water. Experimenting is fun. For perspective, that fallen tree in the upper right corner is over a foot in diameter. Just for comparison, later today I reshot the layered blue ridge mountain scene from the 3/18 PAD - it was a bit less hazy today http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/41448236
