Surprised this fella' - and it me. Was walking toward it (without seeing it as I was looking at a great blue heron about 50 feet away & trying to get into a good position) when I looked a few feet in front of me to see how far I was from water's edge - and there it was. It was all huddled up & looking away from me. Surprise! It turned its head as I put my tripod down - and gave me time for two shots before taking off.
