7/10/04 - Fresh from the Egg; Just minutes old

Killdeer. Been waiting for a month for four eggs to hatch. Two down; two to go. The fledging at the bottom just emerged from the egg at the left - you can see the crack if you look carefully. The one at the top was earler and has already begun to dry & puff up.

Killdeer nest on the ground. Amazing that they survive. The babies are on their feet and feeding on their own within a few hours of hatching - only chickens, duck, etc. also do this.

Here's a picture of mom trying to draw me away. They do a broken wing act while squawking "kill-deer, kill-deer, ....". Pretty birds with brown, gold, black & white coloring - http://www.pbase.com/image/31168073 and two more PAD also-rans here http://www.pbase.com/image/31168074 and here http://www.pbase.com/image/31168075

Amazing! What a great shot! Thank you for the nature lesson as well. I love when PBasers add commentary under their photos, as you do.

I just love watching nature happen! Incredible that the parents don't help out with meals though!
