10/1/08 - Misty Wetland Morning

I'm done with HDR for the time being. It's nice to shoot a normal tonal contrast scene once again. Actually, maybe the reason that I like fog is that, if anything, the contrast is below normal and actually needs cranked up in post processing.
I'm surprised at a number of "name" pro photographers who have gone way over the top in their use of HDR - often for scenes that have absolutely no need for HDR (except to turn a photo into a cartoon). One, in particular, seems to have regressed in his "normal" photography when he takes a break from HDR - not as good as it used to be IMO. But, I guess if I were a pro I'd also have to chase every new camera, program, gadget and craze to be first in line with the latest book or workshop - or else starve.

This is a beautiful shot Ed; I definitely prefer the colour for its painting like tone and mood. Nicely done.

Smashing shot, Ed ... loft the soft focus and the mist ... superb by any measure. V

I prefer this one over the B&W. I think the soft subtle hues are so much a part of the ambiance of this gorgeous photo. Really love the mood in this. V

One instructor recently noted that the current trend is to open up all the shadows for detail, and in his opinion that takes away from the (cinematic) feeling of mystery. I tend to agree.

While this is high key and very gentle, for me it still has that cinematic mystery.
