At a short focal length like 17mm (even at f4) there quite a bit of depth of field.
Having said that, I can see why in that image there is a perception of more than there should be. The rail of the box that I was sitting in, the object at the bottom of the photo that is around 4 feet away, might be perceived to be in focus, but it is not. The closest "nearly in focus"" item is that teenager in the third row, who is about 40 feet away, and as you can see, the very last row of seats (upstairs) is not quite in focus, so the DOF is actually what one would expect.
I suspect that you will get similar results if you try it. Good Luck!
(The really amazing aspect of this photo for me is that, it was successfully handheld at 1/8 sec in my 51 year old hands!)

How did you get such great depth of field and sharpness. I have the same outfit with a 20D and a 17-40 F4L i need to try a similar shot and see if i get the same results otherwise maybe i should send my lens back to canon to get calibrated.
I would appreciate an email with what you did. what focus setting etc... THANKS!
