This is my most recent attempt to duplicate the B&W Julia set showing in figure 15 of the book "The Beauty of Fractals."

I had to do a variety of things to the image to get it to show good detail.

The image used a Distance Estimator algorithm for points very near the set, and then a white to black gradient.

I created a very large plot, then down-sampled it in Photoshop, did levels adjustments, and then applied sharpening.
